How to Define Your Ideal Customer Profile for Component Sales

Estimated time: 15 min What you'll build: Ideal Customer Profile Scenario: Rod Lens Supplier → Endoscope OEM Next: Build Buyer Personas
Knowledge Base ✓→ICP→Buyer Personas→Target Accounts→Research→Scoring→Decision Chain→Strategy→Outreach→Follow-up→Sample / Quote→Sales Learning

Why This Matters

“Companies that might buy” is not a definition. Without a clear ICP, every medical-looking company looks like a prospect, and you waste time on distributors, hospitals and non-medical optics that will never become a rod lens order.

Your ICP should tell the system — and your team — exactly what a qualified account looks like, so research and scoring have something concrete to measure against.

What to Enter: The Customer Profile Framework

Here is the customer profile framework a rod lens supplier enters — from the knowledge base that drives research, scoring and strategy.

A · 45%

Precision coating & assembly houses with in-house coating. Germany / Switzerland / Austria / USA. 5–150 staff. Need UNCOATED blanks. Highest value per deal.

B0 · B 30%

Germany / Western Europe mid-to-small medical endoscope OEM brands that assemble complete endoscope systems under their own brands (Tuttlingen / Berlin cluster). They buy rod lenses to build complete scopes.

B1 · B 30%

Eastern Europe + Latin America endoscope OEM brands (Poland, Czech, Hungary, Romania, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina). Own brand / assembly line, ISO 9001+.

B2 · B 30%

India / Turkey / Russia endoscope OEM brands. Highest price sensitivity; leads require manual compliance review.

C · 10%

Veterinary endoscope assemblers — EU / US / AUS / NZ. No medical certification needed.

D · 10%

Industrial rigid borescope / inspection / NDT manufacturers — EU / US / JP / KR.

E · 5%

Endoscope repair centers + specialty integrators — EU / US / Middle East. Upgrade to A if they have their own assembly / coating capability.

EXCLUDE

<5 staff · virtual offices · pure traders · large OEM giants (Storz / Olympus / Stryker)

Why We Entered It This Way

Why does Profile A get 45% even though B0/B1/B2 rank higher in priority? A has fewer targets but the highest value per deal. B tracks are more numerous but lower value per deal — so A gets more resource per account, while B gets the development priority because it is easier to reach.
Why split the profile into five tiers? In our current sales experience, technical validation tends to carry more weight in some Western European accounts, while price sensitivity appears more frequently in several emerging-market opportunities. Treat this as a working sales hypothesis, not a rule for every company.
Why exclude large OEM giants (Storz / Olympus / Stryker)? They are too large for a Tier 2 component supplier — years-long sales cycles and an established supply base. They are the wrong tier, not the wrong industry.
REAL-WORLD LESSON · GERMAN OPTICAL COMPONENT MANUFACTURER

A German coating/assembly house moved from a cold email to a first quote in about three months. The key: it was a Profile A target — it needed uncoated blanks and could validate the rod lens in-house, which made the sample the turning point.
