Why This Matters

The right company is only half the job. Inside one endoscope OEM, an Optical Engineer, an R&D Manager, a Strategic Sourcing lead and a Purchasing buyer care about different things — and they sit at different points in the decision.

If every role receives the same “we are a rod lens supplier” message, you get ignored by the technical gate and treated as a commodity by the commercial gate. Buyer personas tell the system who to message, with what angle, at which stage.

What to Enter: Four Buyer Personas

TECHNICAL GATE

Optical Engineer / R&D

Cares about: specification, diameter tolerance, centration, surface quality, FOV, working distance, optical performance.

Approach: Lead with relevant manufacturing capability and technical parameters, then ask for the drawing or specification for feasibility review.

PROJECT BACKING

R&D Manager

Cares about: project priority, technical feasibility, supplier capability, development timeline.

Approach: show sample capability and engineer-to-engineer DFM support; prove you can move from drawing to sample fast.

QUALIFICATION GATE

Strategic Sourcing

Cares about: supplier qualification, ISO 9001, supply stability, second-source risk.

Approach: send credentials, capacity and certification; position as a stable Tier 2 partner.

COMMERCIAL GATE

Purchasing

Cares about: price, lead time, MOQ, payment terms, delivery.

Approach: quote after technical fit is established; show batch terms and lead time, not a price-first pitch.

Buyer Persona vs Decision Chain Buyer personas explain what each role cares about. The decision chain explains how those roles interact as an opportunity moves forward.

Why We Entered It This Way

Why approach the Optical Engineer first? Rod lens procurement is technically driven. The engineer often defines the technical requirements and strongly influences which suppliers can move forward. Purchasing typically becomes more important once technical fit has been established. Skipping the engineer puts you in a price comparison too early.
Why not send the same message to everyone? The technical gate needs tolerance and centration data; the commercial gate needs lead time and MOQ. One generic message fails both audiences.
REAL-WORLD LESSON · GERMAN OPTICAL COMPONENT MANUFACTURER

The cold email reached a support inbox first, then was forwarded internally to the CEO — the person who could actually evaluate the sample. The winning move was leading with a specific tolerance and letting the technical question pull the decision maker into the conversation.

See It in B2B Outbound OS

This is how buyer personas are stored and used to shape messaging downstream.

Buyer personas are the bridge between ICP and outreach — they decide who gets which message.
